Digital Design: Culture Vs. Craft

For my essay I am looking into Digital design as a practice and starting off by looking particularly at Basso & Brooke’s Neo Pop SS10 collection.

I want to specialise in Print for my future practice so am looking into their work to gain an insight into what they use as their inspiration and how they execute their ideas so well. Basso and Brooke have always inspired me in the way I think about print, and as a very visual person I want to really analyse what it is about their work that I am responding to.

The main points I will be discussing in my essay will be about digital Print being considered a revolutionary move in design and whether it is being seen as maybe ‘less skilled’ physically than the more traditional craftsmanship that is involved in some aspects of designing. I am looking to compare Basso and Brooke’s collection to that of other designers in print, such as Jonathan Saunders and Alexander Mcqueen.

So far I have looked into the PopArt work of Jeff Koons who’s exhibition at the serpentine gallery inspired the NeoPop SS10 collection and have begun looking into the use of colour and shape that they took from his work.

I’m planning on following some blogs on the internet to find out more about the opinions of people involved in design and to get multiple points of view. I’m also looking at fashion websites such as Vogue, Style.com, and other magazines to get an idea of what it is people are responding to at the moment and the write ups other digital designers are getting too.

Key Points:

  • Analysis of Basso&Brooke SS10 collection, looking at inspirations and processes.

  • The ethical issues facing Digital and Traditional methods.

  • The skill involved in Digital and Traditional processes and the limits.

  • Looking at other designers who use Digital design in their work: Jonathan Saunders, Alexander Mcqueen.
